Strategic Context
The Humanitarian Representation Team (HRT) acts as the diplomatic arm of MSF in Geneva. It is responsible for managing the organization’s relationships with the United Nations, international organizations, and the Permanent Missions of Member States.
We are currently seeking an Intern to support the HRT in maintaining critical dialogue with key humanitarian actors. This role offers a unique vantage point into the workings of the international humanitarian system in Geneva. You will contribute directly to our advocacy efforts, ensuring that MSF’s operational concerns are heard in high-level forums.
Position Mandate
Reporting to the Humanitarian Representative in Geneva, you will serve as an analyst and liaison support officer. Your primary mandate is to monitor, analyze, and report on the geopolitical and humanitarian landscape as it unfolds in Geneva.
You will attend official briefings, track policy developments, and support the preparation of advocacy materials. This position requires intellectual rigor, discretion, and the ability to synthesize complex political information rapidly.
Key Responsibilities
Monitoring & Analysis
- Monitor ongoing meetings and sessions of Geneva-based institutions (UN, WHO, ICRC, etc.) relevant to MSF’s operational priorities.
- Analyze reports and policy documents from the UN and other international bodies to identify trends affecting humanitarian access and medical action.
- Draft concise analytical notes and background briefings for the Humanitarian Representative and senior operations staff.
Liaison & Advocacy Support
- Support the maintenance of MSF’s network of contacts within the Geneva diplomatic community.
- Assist in the organization of bilateral meetings, roundtables, and public events hosted by the HRT.
- Prepare dossiers and talking points for high-level engagements with state representatives and UN officials.
Communication & Reporting
- Contribute to the drafting of the HRT’s regular internal reporting, ensuring key messages are communicated effectively to MSF field missions and headquarters.
- Manage information flow and maintain the department’s contact database.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a candidate with a strong academic background in international relations and a genuine interest in humanitarian diplomacy.
Essential Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree (or nearing completion) in International Relations, Political Science, International Law, or Humanitarian Action.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of the international humanitarian system, the UN architecture in Geneva, and current geopolitical crises.
- Skills: Excellent analytical and writing skills. You must be able to summarize complex discussions accurately.
- Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory (C1/C2 level).
Desirable Assets
- Prior internship experience within an international organization, NGO, or diplomatic mission.
- Knowledge of global health issues or conflict dynamics.
Terms of Employment
- Contract: Internship contract, 6 months (renewable once).
- Remuneration: Gross monthly salary of CHF 2,000.
- Benefits: 25 days of paid leave per year (pro-rated).
