Are you looking for a meaningful specialist position where you can combine professional development with a high quality of life?

This is an opportunity to work within child and adolescent psychiatry in a close-knit Nordic healthcare environment, while living in a peaceful island community surrounded by nature and the sea.

01About the Island

This Nordic island is home to approximately 30,000 residents and offers a safe, peaceful and family-friendly environment. With its beautiful archipelago, clean air and easy access to outdoor activities such as hiking, sailing and cycling, the island provides excellent opportunities for an active lifestyle outside of work.

For professionals considering relocation with their families, the island offers schools, daycare services and a welcoming community within a compact geographical area.

02About the psychiatric service

The child and adolescent psychiatric service covers the entire island and serves approximately 5,900 children and adolescents aged 0-17.

The service is primarily outpatient-based and currently has around 140 active patients, with approximately 210 referrals per year. About 50% of referrals relate to neurodevelopmental conditions, making ADHD and autism an important part of the clinical work.

Common psychiatric conditions include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Other child and adolescent psychiatric conditions

Treatment includes psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions, pharmacological treatment, psychoeducation and support for both patients and their families.

When needed, the team also collaborates with schools, social services and other healthcare providers.

03About the Role

As a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry, you will have a broad and varied clinical role with the opportunity to follow patients throughout their assessment and treatment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing, diagnosing and treating children and adolescents with a broad range of psychiatric conditions
  • Working with both general psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD and autism
  • Developing and following up individualized treatment plans
  • Providing pharmacological treatment when appropriate
  • Working closely with psychologists, nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals
  • Collaborating with families, schools, social services and other healthcare providers when needed
  • Participating in clinical discussions and contributing your specialist expertise to the multidisciplinary team
  • Supporting and mentoring residents and junior doctors
  • Contributing to the continued development of the psychiatric service

Physicians typically see approximately 4-5 patients per day, alongside clinical rounds, acute assessments and other outpatient responsibilities.

There may also be opportunities for further professional development and increased responsibility within the organization.

04Outpatient Work and Acute Psychiatry

The work is predominantly outpatient-based. The child and adolescent psychiatric service does not have its own inpatient ward or separate on-call service.

Acute cases are primarily handled through a reserved acute appointment at the outpatient clinic each week. Other urgent cases may present through the emergency department or psychiatric inpatient services.

When required, the initial assessment can be carried out by the on-call physician within adult psychiatry, in consultation with the child and adolescent psychiatric team.

If a patient requires inpatient care, this is arranged in cooperation with adult psychiatry or the paediatric department, depending on the patient's age, clinical needs and availability.

This structure allows you to focus primarily on planned outpatient psychiatric care while still being involved in acute assessments when required.

05Requirements

We are looking for a specialist who:

  • Holds an EU-recognized specialist qualification in child and adolescent psychiatry
  • Has broad clinical experience in assessing and treating psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents
  • Is comfortable working with neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and autism
  • Can work independently while also enjoying close multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Has strong communication skills and a patient- and family-centered approach
  • Is interested in contributing to the professional development of colleagues and junior doctors
  • Communicates well in English and is motivated to learn Swedish

06Why consider this opportunity?

  • Work-life balance: Outpatient-based work with no dedicated on-call duties within the child and adolescent psychiatric service.
  • Broad clinical role: Work across child and adolescent psychiatry, with significant exposure to ADHD, autism and other psychiatric conditions.
  • Collaborative environment: Join a close multidisciplinary team and contribute with your specialist expertise.
  • Nordic island lifestyle: Enjoy a safe, family-friendly community surrounded by nature and the sea.
