Job description

About the role

Full text from the employer, as published on Arbeitnow, arranged into sections. Nothing added or removed.

We started building Marshmallow in 2017. Since then, we’ve grown from 3 to 700+ people, gained unicorn status, raised ~£140M over three funding rounds, turned profitable, insured millions of drivers and lent millions in car loans.

But we’re only just getting started. Our goal is to become one of the largest financial services providers in the world. Over the next 10 years we’ll grow exponentially, not only by scaling our existing products, but also by building new ones.

To achieve our goals we need incredibly ambitious, commercially driven people who never settle for ‘good enough’. Marshmallowers are hungry for autonomy and ownership, and would rather improve than coast. Everyone raises standards and has an impact, with a focus on collective success over self-interest.

We’ve created an environment where curious, tenacious people win and grow together. If that sounds motivating, this could be the place for you.

01About the team

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Employee Relations Consultant to join our People team. In this role, you will be pivotal in maintaining a fair, compliant, and positive work environment. You will manage end-to-end complex employee casework, drive continuous improvement across HR processes, refine key employment policies, and collaborate closely with our Compliance and Risk teams to support our firm’s enhanced regulatory status.

We're looking for an Employee Relations Consultant to join Marshmallow's People team for an initial three-month engagement, with the possibility of extending to six months depending on caseload. We're open to either a fixed-term contract or a day-rate consultancy arrangement.

02What you'll be doing

  • Leading complex UK ER cases, assessing risk and judging when or if external legal advice is needed.

  • Embedding practical procedures that turn our updated policies into consistent day-to-day ways of working.

  • Strengthening case documentation and storage across locations so records are accessible to the right people and ready for audit.

  • Delivering targeted manager training informed by casework patterns to build confidence and prevent escalation.

  • Partnering with People Partners and the Hungarian People team on case handling, consistent processes and FCA standards.

03Your expertise

  • Experience independently managing complex UK employee relations cases, backed by a strong working knowledge of UK employment law.

  • Experience developing ER policies and procedures, embedding them in an organisation and helping managers use them.

  • Experience designing and delivering manager training that helps prevent recurring issues and unnecessary escalation.

  • An understanding of ER in a regulated environment, including how FCA standards affect employee conduct and case handling.

You don't need a background in tech. We're more interested in the complexity of the cases you've handled and your ability to combine casework, process improvement and manager support.

04Who you are

  • You weigh legal and business risks pragmatically and explain your recommendations clearly.

  • You constructively challenge senior stakeholders and external advisers when a different approach is warranted.

  • You get up to speed quickly, prioritise a changing caseload and collaborate closely with a lean People team.

  • You use AI thoughtfully in ER work, with appropriate confidentiality safeguards and human judgement.

05Our process

  1. An initial call with Orla from our Talent team for 45 minutes about your experience and approach to the role.

  2. An interview with our Head of People and our Lead People Partner for 90 mins, including scenario-based questions about case handling, risk and stakeholder challenge.

We review every application and will always let you know the outcome, though we're unable to provide individual feedback at application stage.

06Diversity of thought

We know the best ideas come from having different perspectives in the room - and we're committed to hiring fairly, regardless of background, identity or experience. If you see yourself in this role, we'd encourage you to apply.
