Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there's one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.
This is a new role, on a new team. The Brand Team sits alongside Design Systems in Design Foundations and keeps Discord's identity, voice, and visual system consistent across every surface where the brand appears. We run the brand like an internal product: we set its strategy, build and maintain its guidelines and tools, enable other teams to use it on their own, and review brand-facing work across product, marketing, partnerships, and legal. Marketing is a client of Brand: we equip their work with a brand that stays clear and current, while campaigns, ads, and launch messaging stay theirs to run.
You're a brand designer with gaming in your bones who can set the vision and do the work. You think in systems: logo, color, type, iconography, illustration, and motion are parts of one identity, and you know how to write the rules that keep it coherent when hundreds of people use it. You're as comfortable presenting brand architecture to executives as you are refining a wordmark. You're a generous partner who grounds every decision in reasoning rather than taste, and you'd rather teach a team to use the brand well than gatekeep it.
This person will report to the Director of Product Design, Design Foundations.
01What You'll Be Doing
- Defining Discord's brand strategy: positioning, brand architecture across the master brand and sub-brands like Nitro (Discord's premium subscription), and the narrative of what Discord stands for and for whom
- Owning and evolving Discord's visual identity system, including logo, wordmark, color, typography, iconography, illustration, and motion
- Building and maintaining brand and sub-brand guidelines, including standards for co-branding, partnerships, and third-party integrations, and partnering with Voice & Tone and User Communications to bring the Voice & Writing Guide into the brand system
- Building templates, design kits, asset libraries, and a self-serve brand portal, and enabling teams to use the brand on their own through office hours, a support channel, onboarding, and workshops
- Reviewing and approving brand-facing work across marketing, product, and partnerships, and working with Legal on trademark and usage policy
- Applying the brand directly on core surfaces, including app icons, deck templates, the marketing site design system, office spaces, signage, and merch, and art-directing the external partners who help produce them
- Running an annual brand audit across every surface, monitoring the competitive landscape, and mentoring future Brand team members
02What you should have
- 10+ years of experience in brand or identity design, including owning a brand system at scale for a gaming or games-adjacent brand
- A portfolio with exemplary craft across identity, typography, color, iconography, illustration, and motion, applied across digital product, marketing, and physical spaces, with your role on each project clearly shown
- A track record of brand strategy work, including positioning, brand architecture, and sub-brand systems
- Experience writing brand guidelines and governance models and running them over time: maintaining them, holding teams accountable to them, and evolving them as they're tested in real use
- Comfort with ambiguity: you've built a brand practice where there was no playbook, and you're willing to do the hands-on work while setting direction
- A demonstrated ability to align stakeholders at every level, from executives to individual designers, with clear reasoning and strong presentation skills
- Hands-on experience using AI tools and agents in brand work, and a clear point of view on where AI helps craft and where it doesn't
03Bonus Points
- Experience standing up a brand function, brand portal, or DAM (digital asset management system) from scratch
- Experience with co-branding and partnership governance, or trademark and usage compliance
- Experience working alongside a design systems team, including Figma libraries and variables
